Equuscapes

Día de Andalucía is one of the most important dates in the Andalusian calendar. Celebrated each year on 28 February, it marks the anniversary of the region gaining autonomy in 1980. Across Andalucía, people enjoy a public holiday and celebrate with unmistakable passion and style.

In Córdoba, the ancient city rich in culture and equestrian heritage, hundreds of horses parade through the historic streets, beginning and ending at the iconic Royal Stables of Córdoba. The event was cancelled in 2025 due to severe weather conditions, which meant expectations for the 2026 Marcha Hípica were even higher.

For years I have watched Andalucia Day from afar, to finally be here in a city we love so much, was special.. It was an emotional and unforgettable day, although not quite one that went to plan. I quickly discovered just how vast Córdoba is, and how challenging it can be to photograph hundreds of moving horses across a crowded city.  I was determined to capture some lovely iPhone footage of all the horses leaving so I could post straightaway on this important day for the people of Andalucía, this went well, and you can watch HERE.

We then followed the horses and decided to cut across Córdoba to get in front of them – fatal error! Even running frantically it’s the most beautiful city to pass through, but it is very, very big and we got this wrong and had to accept just seeing them on the last stretch back to the Royal Stables. My emotions ran high and a few tears were shed in frustration, we live and learn!   After the march the Royal Stables were open to all, the bar was buzzing and paella served all. The sun shone, the atmosphere was electric, the comaradarie clear to see. Viva Andalucia!  Sometimes we just have to be in the moment, and this was a day I will never forget, and there’s still some lovely images to enjoy!
